Michael Gableman Deserves to Have His Law License Revoked

Law Forward filed a motion on October 13, 2025, urging the Wisconsin Supreme Court to accept a brief arguing that a three-year suspension of Michael Gableman’s law license is inadequate and fails to reflect the severity of his misconduct.

While the Office of Lawyer Regulation (OLR) and Gableman reached agreement on a three-year suspension, neither party, nor the Referee assigned by the Supreme Court to recommend a proper, proportional sanction under Wisconsin law, provided any explanation for why a three-year suspension is merited here.

“Mr. Gableman relentlessly pursued a sham investigation designed to overturn the will of Wisconsin voters and engaged in severely unethical behavior in an attempt to accomplish this goal,” said Law Forward President and General Counsel Jeff Mandell. “Mr. Gableman deserves to face the strongest penalty possible, which is why his law license must be revoked. A temporary suspension sends the message that lawyers can engage in such conduct and return to practice in a few years. That’s unacceptable.”

Gableman stipulated to ten separate ethical violations, including filing court papers with false statements, making false public testimony, defying a judge’s orders in court, attacking a judge’s integrity, violating client confidentiality, ignoring the state’s Open Records Law, and lying to OLR investigators.

Law Forward has been at the forefront of holding Gableman accountable for his conduct. In March of 2023, Law Forward filed an omnibus grievance with the OLR, which prompted the investigation that led OLR to bring disciplinary claims against Gableman.

The Wisconsin Supreme Court has final authority over all attorney discipline in the state and will make the ultimate decision on Gableman’s sanction.
